Oscar Wilde wrote for one of his characters, "We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars." So it is to be an artist. I am tickled pink about educational, experimental, multidisciplinary, multicultural, and multi-hilarious forms of art. As a storyteller and performer of improvised, scripted, devised, and site-specific works, I channel the following: Eastern and Western cultural traditions, ancient theatre characteristics, observations of human quirks, alternative strategies for audience engagement, inspiration from other arts disciplines, and the legacy of artists pushing the bounds of form, theme, or social expectations, such as Samuel Beckett, Suzan-Lori Parks, Dorothy Parker, Maria Irene Fornes, and Bertolt Brecht. Ultimately, I am intrigued by the evocative and provocative components of art and how they intertwine with social themes, including basic human rights, diversity, and gender equality.
A graduate of Carnegie Mellon University, I am a Pittsburgh-based writer, educator, and collaborative theatre artist with a global perspective. I have created pieces for festivals, community events, and schools, including Pittsburgh Fringe Festival (see profile photo for a production image), Poets Corner's Bard Walk, Women's Independent Press' Celebration of Pittsburgh Women, No Name Players' Support Women Artists Now (SWAN) Day, Organic Theater's Earth Day Festival, The Ellis School, and Gateway to the Arts' preschool programs. For ten years, I worked with the Amish Monkeys Improvisational Comedy Troupe to create and perform short-form scenes and games for a dedicated fan base. I have continued my artistic work beyond Pittsburgh for Gilbert Theater's New Play Festival in North Carolina, Theatre Communications Group's National Conference in Los Angeles, and LA Stage Alliance's National Playwrights' Slam. Additionally, I collaborated with Washington, D.C.'s Spilling Ink to develop a Bharatanatyam dance, poetry, and theatre production in Chennai, India, where I also taught creative workshops for students and educators through the American Consulate. Currently, I share my arts mission and passion as an adjunct professor, standardized patient, and freelance author.
Note to Viewers: My work samples on this site consist of literary pieces I have written as well as photos and videos of performances I have composed or co-devised. All theatre works involved collaboration with other talented artists.
