By trade I am a public-school art teacher, working with underserved youth in Pittsburgh inner-city schools. My artwork, in turn, is a direct translation of my experiences as a young teacher—passionate, but conflicted—navigating a broken system. I use a variety of mixed-media processes to create large and striking works that thematically represent shortcomings in education, considering the perspective of the student.
Most projects begin with a rigid image that stands to represent the system—the predispositions, impact of standardization over individualization, and the deficiencies in supports and funding. This is then juxtaposed with raw and visceral mark-making representing the student construct—their own perceptions, coping mechanism, and social positions. I pull from experiences, conversations, and student artwork to aid in producing more authentic ideas. Moreover, reflection through my artwork continues to inform my practice, especially improving my abilities as a teacher.
I am working to include more students, parents, and professionals in my art-making process playing an active role. One day I would see this work offer opportunities for advocacy and fundraising on behalf of students, educators, and artists in the Pittsburgh-area and ignite critical conversation around the issues plaguing education in America.
I'm originally from southwest WA-state, but I now reside in Pittsburgh, PA. I went recieved a BA-Ed from Western Washington University in 2015; core focuses of my studies included multicultural education, restorative justice, community engagement, and interdisciplinary art practices--central constructs for my practices today. I currently teach in Pittsburgh's Hill District and Lawrenceville in elementary schools serving predominantly disenfranchised youth, many of whom are refugees or immigrants from warring regions in Africa and the middle-east. Before I moved to Pittsburgh I taught high school art, design, and ceramics near Portland, OR for two years. I currently maintain a studio through Radiant Hall at their Lawrenceville location.
