Aspinwall originates from a photograph of an element on a train trestle I found in the community of Aspinwall, PA. This is part of the beautiful rail line that runs along the northern bank of the Allegheny River from Freeport, PA to downtown Pittsburgh. The particular way the steel rusted combined with a wonderful field of large rivets is what enticed me to create this design. My Rust Lands series of glass designs is an ongoing meditation on the Pittsburgh region's former industrial past and how the physical remnants of the steel industry shape present day Pittsburgh and the region's broader identity. I have been fortunate to experience the industrial ethos directly through my employment at Taktl, an architectural elements manufacturer, in the former Westinghouse factory complex in Turtle Creek, PA. It is through this experience and my personal explorations of Pittsburgh that I am discovering the rich and multivaried textures of the decayed industrial landscape used in this series.
